*The world’s most eaten food is rice – a staple for more than half of the global population.

*There are thousands of different types of rice like brown, white, black, wild, arborio, and basmati.

*Some of the most unpopular foods include cilantro, celery, and tofu.

*Pound cake doesn’t actually weigh a pound.

*Raspberries, cherries, and strawberries are members of the rose family.

*The Caesar Salad was invented in Tijuana, Mexico in the 1920s – not Rome, Italy.

*In Spain and Mexico, avocados are often called “alligator pears.”

*Spam – the meat-in-a-can – is short for spiced ham.

*California rolls and Hawaiian pizza were invented in Canada.

*Cucumbers are 95% water; watermelons are 92% water.

*A single pomegranate has up to 1400 seeds.

*Ripe cranberries bounce.

*Potatoes were the first vegetable grown in space.

*The smelliest fruit is called Durian and grows in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand.

*Cooking has been around since Early Humans.

*Studies show that cooking relieves stress.

*NPR (National Public Radio) says that round white plates are great for sweet foods; black, angular plates enhance savory flavors.

*Bananas are considered berries but strawberries are not.

*According to Time, research shows that altruistic cooking and sharing food creates strong bonds in many cultures.

*The Industrial Revolution brought big changes in cooking with mass production, food processing, and canning.

*Roasting is cooking with dry heat, usually in an oven or over a fire.

*Grilling or broiling is a way to cook food quickly over direct, high heat.

*Molecular gastronomy is the science of cooking.

*Home-cooking is often linked to comfort food.

*Today, many ingredients and methods used in home-cooking can be found in restaurants.

*According to National Geographic, the oldest known hearth was found in a limestone cave east of Tel Aviv, Israel. Ran Barkai called it “the first-ever fireplace.”

*Professional cooking is often referred to as the culinary arts or the art, science, and craft using heat to make food.

*Lauren McGurrin in herbalandspiced, believed that “the ordinary practice of cooking . . . [draws] us into the realm of the spiritual.”

*Cooking shows are popular. Think Iron Chef, With Love, Megan, The Great British Bake Off, and Gordon Ramsay’s Secret Service.

*Popular chefs have become household names, like Bobby Flay, Wolfgang Puck, and Rachel Ray.

*There are so many movies and shows that feature food! Consider The Bear, Mystic Pizza, Like Water for Chocolate, Chef, and Julie & Julia.

*World famous chef, restaurateur, author, known today as “the father of modern cuisine”, Auguste Escoffier, accurately observed, “Good food is the foundation of genuine happiness.”
