CHURRO BYTES

*The traditional (basic) recipe for churros has 3 ingredients: flour, salt, and water.

*Mexicans eat shorter, thicker churros coated in cinnamon, sugar, and often dipped in chocolate sauce.

*One theory claims that churros originated in China with the “Chinese cruller” or you tiao (below). Portuguese explorers brought them back to the Iberian Peninsula in the early sixteenth century.

 

*Churros are found around the world with local variations.

 

 

*Some chefs have even tried savory versions filling churros with cheese or chili.

*In Uruguay you can find churros filled with melted cheese.

*One legend claims that churros got their name because they reminded Spanish shepherds of the horns of the Navajo-Churro breed of sheep.

 

 

*Street Churros claims to be the world’s largest churros café chain in Malaysia, describing their mission to “elevate street food with premium, fresh ingredients and the culinary genius of our 5-star chefs.”

*A churreria is a restaurant, shop, or stand that sells churros.

*Maup van de Kerkhof described churros in the History Cooperative as a “symbol of celebration, joy, and the vibrant street food culture that is an integral part of Spain’s culinary identity . . . captivating taste buds worldwide.”

*Churro ice cream sandwiches are made by putting ice cream between two churros or a churro bun.

*Churros are often prepared by shaping the dough into a bowl and deep-frying until it’s ready to eat. It can be filled with anything from ice cream and whipped cream to fruit and chocolate.

*New versions have appeared like churro chips, churro strips, churro cereals, churro cookies, churro ice cream, and churro milkshakes.

*You can get churros at Disney, including churro waffles.

*In South Korea and Japan, churros are often served with dipping sauces like green tea or sweet condensed milk.

*Ancient peoples fried dough that evolved into churros.

*Mike Randolph wrote in bbc.com “Churros has been one of the most popular food indulgences of any kind and now has become one of the highest-ranked recipe searches on Google.”
